December 2017

Beam final imports to the U.S. were down 1.2% year to date (YTD), year on year (y/y), totaling 484,642 tons for the ten months ending October 2017. For the month of October, Beam imports totaled 39,357 tons down 18.8% from the YTD average of 48,464.

Merchant final imports to the U.S. were down 5.2% year to date (YTD), year on year (y/y), totaling 437,115 tons for the ten months ending October 2017. October merchant imports came in at 30,515 tons, 30.4% less than the 43,712 ton YTD average volume.

November 2017

For the 12 months ending October 2017, U.S. mill shipments of long products increased by 6.6% year on year, (y/y). U.S. domestic consumption of long products increased by 3.2% over the same timeframe.

Total tonnage for the week ending November 25th was 1,703 million tons, (Mt) at a capacity utilization rate of 73.0%, 1.9 percentage points lower than the previous week. On a four moving average, (4WMA) basis, the capacity utilization rate was 0.5 percentage point lower at 74.0%.

Rebar licenses through November 14th totaled 39,952 tons, well down, (71.4%) from the year to date, (YTD) average of 139,918 tons.

Beam licenses year to-date (YTD), through November 14th totaled 493,328 tons, down 6.9%, or 36,835 tons from last year’s YTD total of 530,163 tons. November to-date license requests were for 3,759 tons, a fraction of the YTD average of 44,848 tons.
