Market Update
January 2018
Beam through January 11th totaled 3,363 tons, down 36,667 tons or 92.7% from last January’s total of 40,030 tons. Overall beam import licensed tons in 2017 were lower than in 2016. The 2016 total was 568,065 tons 26,934 tons or 4.7% less than the 541,131 ton level in 2017.
The total tonnage for the week ending January 6th was 1,649 million tons, (Mt) at a capacity utilization rate of 70.7%. On a four week moving average, (4WMA) basis, tonnage output was 1,676 Mt, at a capacity utilization rate of 71.9%.
December 2017
All longs licenses year to-date (YTD), through December 27th totaled 5.476 million tons, (Mt) down 9.5% from last year’s YTD total of 6.053Mt. December to-date license requests were for 260,964 tons, 43% lower than the YTD average of 456,333 tons.
For the 12 months ending November 2017, U.S. mill shipments of long products increased by 5.9% year on year, (y/y). U.S. domestic consumption of long products increased by 1.8% over the same timeframe.
Wire rod final imports to the U.S. were up 3.8% year to date (YTD), year on year (y/y), totaling 1,680,599 tons for the ten months ending October 2017. October’s tonnage recorded 148,477 tons, 11.4% lower than the YTD average volume of 168,070 tons.
Rebar final imports to the US were down 20.5% year to date (YTD), year on year (y/y), totaling 1,453,213 tons for the ten months ending October 2017. October rebar imports were 79,931 tons, 20.5% lower than the YTD average of 145,321 tons.
