Beam final imports to the US were down 2.3% year to date (YTD), year on year (y/y), totaling 343,965 tons for the seven months ending July 2017. For the month of July, Beam imports totaled 71,036 tons up 56.2% from the January through June average of 45,488.

Worldsteel Association (WSA) reports that global crude steel production totaled 143.58 million tonnes (Mt) at a capacity utilization rate, (CUR) of 72.2% in August. On a year on year, (y/y) comparison, the capacity utilization rate was up 3.7 percentage points, a significant increase.

China Metals Weekly (CMW), September 21st newsletter reported that long products prices fell across the board on a week over week basis from 0.5% to 2.1%. However, on a month over month (m/m), basis long products increased for all long product lines.

For the 12 months ending August 2017, US mill shipments of long products* increased by 2.9%. US domestic consumption of long products increased by 0.9% over the same timeframe. Import share of long products averaged 21.1% over the past 12 months, down 1.5% year on year, (y/y).

U.S. steel production average capacity utilization rate came in at 74.9% over the past week ending September 16th, up 0.6 percentage points over the previous  week. On a four moving average, (4WMA) basis, the capacity utilization rate was slightly less at 74.7%.

Beam licenses year to date (YTD), through September 14th totaled 423,658 tons, down 5.0% from last year’s YTD 446,138 tons. September to date license requests were for 18,199 tons, down substantially from the YTD average through August of 50,682 tons.
