U.S. Steel Merchant Final Imports

Merchant final imports to the U.S. came in at 23,302 tons in June 2019, down 8.0% month over month (MoM), and up 9.5% year over year (YoY)

merchantsimports-fig1Figure 1 further breaks down total final merchant imports from January 2018 – June 2019. When comparing year to date figures from 2018 and 2019.

Figure 1 also charts the largest exporting countries in rank order through January for both 2019 and 2018.  Mexico and Canada combined account for 87% of the total in June 2019, down slightly from 74% in 2018. Canada was the largest exporter with 10,164 tons. Mexican imports came in at 9,940 in June 2019.

Laredo, TX port was the largest receiver of U.S. merchants in June 2019, receiving 6,710 tons of the total 23,202. Detroit, MI port was the second largest receiver coming in at 6,124 tons and the El Paso, TX port was the third largest receiver coming in at 1,670 tons. Together, these top three receiving ports collected 63% of all U.S. merchant imports
