Architectural Billings Index: September 2021’s national Architectural Billings Index of 56.6 was up 1.0 point from August’s 55.6, which is within the expansionary zone, (>50). U.S. architecture firms specializing in multifamily residential and commercial / industrial facilities all reported an increase in design activity in September.
­­­Construction Put-in-Place, (CPIP): Total U.S. construction spending continued to perform well in August 2021, especially in the private sector. Census Bureau non-seasonally adjusted (NSA), constant dollar CPIP data showed that August’s three month total (3MT) construction expenditures grew by 12.5% year on year (y/y) to $425.8 billion. On a 3MT basis, private expenditures advanced 19.4% y/y, state & local declined by 2.0% y/y, and federal spend decreased 16.1% y/y.

U.S. architecture firms specializing in institutional, multifamily residential, and commercial / industrial facilities all reported an increase in design activity in August.

Census Bureau non-seasonally adjusted (NSA), constant dollar CPIP data showed that July’s three month total (3MT) construction expenditures grew by 12.4% year on year (y/y) to $412.5 billion. On a 12MT basis, private expenditures advanced 19.8% y/y, state & local declined by 3.3% y/y, and federal spend decreased 19.0% y/y.

August 2021

Architectural Billings Index: July 2021’s national Architectural Billings Index of 54.6 was down 2.5 points from June’s 57.1, which is within the expansionary zone, (>50). U.S. architecture firms specializing in institutional, multifamily residential and commercial / industrial facilities all reported an increase in design activity in July.
­­­Construction Put in Place, (CPIP): Total U.S. construction spending continued to perform well in June 2021, especially in the private sector. Census Bureau non-seasonally adjusted (NSA), constant dollar CPIP data showed that June’s three month total (3MT) construction expenditures grew by 11.9% year on year (y/y) to $395.8 billion. On a 12MT basis, private expenditures advanced 11.4% y/y, state & local advanced by 1.9% y/y, and federal spend decreased by 2.6% y/y.
