Construction Put-in-Place, (CPIP): Total U.S. construction spending continued to perform well in May 2020, especially in the state and local sector. Census Bureau non-seasonally adjusted (NSA), constant dollar CPIP data showed that May’s twelve month total, (12MT) construction expenditures grew by 5.8% year on year (y/y), to $340.6 billion (B). On a 12MT basis, private expenditures advanced 6.0% y/y, while, State & Local advanced by 4.9% y/y. Non-residential 12MT CPIP increased by 6.6%, 12MT y/y to $154.4 B.

Census Bureau non-seasonally adjusted (NSA), constant dollar CPIP data showed that April’s twelve month total, (12MT) construction expenditures grew by 4.9% year on year (y/y), to $315.3 billion (B). On a 12MT basis, private expenditures advanced 4.9% y/y, while, State & Local advanced by 4.2% y/y. Non-residential 12MT CPIP increased by 2.7%, 12MT y/y to $141.2 B.
Architectural Billings Index: May’s ABI national overall score of 32.0 was up 2.5 points from April’s 29.5, but still under the expansionary zone, (>50).
Architectural Billings Index: April ABI national overall score of 29.5 was down 3.8 points from March’s 33.3, which is under the expansionary zone, (>50). U.S. architecture firms specializing in commercial and industrial facilities likewise reported a decrease design activity in April, coming on the heels of a significant downturn in March. Firms concentrating in the multifamily either residential or institutional sector reported loses in April.
